Reviews

I will usually go through three or four tricks before I find one I like that I feel is good enough for this review column. My most important criteria is that the tricks works well in the real world. I’m not looking for pipe dreams or tricks with a lot of set-up. In this process I have seen a lot of bad magic.

I had high expectations for Completely Mental. I am a big fan of Tom Wright, and knew he was a real world worker. To begin with, for me the production of this DVD was lacking. The filming in the bar was distracting, and the in studio performances were not much better.

I was ready to search for a different review item when I watched one of the last tricks on the DVD. It is a transposition of two signed cards. The choreography of the trick is perfect, and you can see how it totally fools the spectators on the performance section. This is a real fooler.

The last trick on the DVD is also great. Five coins are placed on the table. While your back is turned, a spectator puts an X on the back of one of the coins, then mixes them up. You are able to determine which coin they picked. This is done with ordinary coins and is extremely strong.

As I said, I almost prematurely gave up on this DVD. I am happy I didn’t as these two tricks have become two of my favorites this year. - Jon Jensen
