Close-Up Magic

Legendary Hierophant     $67.00
Qty:
The year was 1969. An alternative experimental magic quarterly, initiated by Jon Racherbaumer came out during this exciting time in magic. Dai Vernon was exerting his seminal influence at the Magic Castle, Ed Marlo was at the height of his powers in Chicago, and a new breed of well-informed magicians were creating in unprecedented ways. This historic ferment dramatically shaped the future of close-up magic.

The Hierophant was an integral part of that ferment. It was also a decade of innovations and controversies, of sea-changes and accusations, of technical progress and black humor. The Hierophant was smack dab in the middle of this heavy carnical. This retrospective volume reconfirms its unique contribution to that decade. All the different tricks, sleights, ideas, opinions and satires it published from 1969 to 1980 made a difference then and still make a difference today.

Magic Bar & Grill     $45.00

The "Magic Bar and Grill," began as an outlet for Goldman's magical ideas, presentations, methods, opinions, etc... Nine years and ten issues later, Bill has compiled a significant amount of material including routines and effects from his own professional act. Now all these great magical insights can be yours in one booklet.

What People Are Saying:
"Bill Goldman is a genius. There are many things I admire about Bill but his strength of material/ease-of-method ratio is at the top of the list. His tricks are not only magician foolers, but laymen fall all over themselves as well. His Bar and Grill book contains a WEALTH of material. I am thrilled that he keeps putting them out." -- Doc Eason

"Bill Goldman is a pro who, among pro circles, is widely regarded as a true 'worker,' the highest compliment a professional can generally offer. There are those who will also mention that he is a nice guy, an all but supernatural combination. This little bit of handiwork has a higher bang-for-buck ratio than most of the last 10 hardcover magic books you probably bought. There have been eight (ten) issues since 1995, and almost every one has at least one piece that I would consider worthy of professional use. Read that sentence again and try to find out the last time I said that in 64 pages -- I found eight useable routines. I don't think so. That's all I'm going to say about it. Don't say I didn't warn you. Do something good for yourself. Buy this. Learn a good trick. What's wrong with that idea, huh? Just tell me. You'll thank me later." -- Jamie Ian Swiss

"Bill, you are a genius!!" -- Gaetan Bloom

Magic Menu Final Four     $15.00
Qty:
After ten years and 60 issues, The Magic Menu ceased being "the international journal for professional restaurant and bar magicians" and became for one brief, shining volume "the professional journal for working close-up magicians."

Two hard-bound compendiums were issued that contained the initial 60 issues. It was announced in Issue 61 of the newly-expanded format that the magazine would only be available henceforth as individual issues.

Then one day Jim Sisti announced "Last Call" and closed The Magic Menu kitchen forever.

It just shows you should never say never!

Herein you'll find the eleventh and final volume of The Magic Menu. All four greatly-expanded issues published with this new mission statement are here, representing co-editors Jim Sisti and Andrew Pinard's effort to expand the perceived boundaries of professional close-up magic beyond restaurants and bars. You'll find vital information about working in venues as varied as trade shows and after-grad parties in addition to the great, commercial close-up magic that The Magic Menu has always been noted for.

This book closes the story of one of magic's most original publications.

The original issues sold for $60.00 at magic shops. Now you can get this valuable information for more than 55% off the cover price.

192 pages. 6" x 9" perfect-bound. Two color cover.
Magic Menu Issue 64     $13.75

Issue 64 is more of a "mixed bag" than previous issues, with various perspectives on a large variety of topics of interest to professional workers.

Coeditor Jim Sisti tackles the thorny issue of just what to call what it is that professional performers do. Alain Nu then begins a new series of columns discussing various ways to carry around all of our magic "baggage." Scott Davis joins "The Magic Menu" staff in this issue and will be weighing in on the all-important topics related to marketing and promotions. "In the Trenches" correspondent Paul Green talks about an unusual, impromptu card sword to illustrate the benefits of quick thinking on your feet. "Financial Wizard" Eric Henning then chimes in with the fourth part of his very important series on covering your assets, this time about what to do when disaster strikes. Richard Robinson discusses the profundity of a simple "thank you" and David Acer revisits a book from one of magic's most influential personages which should be on your shelf already. Mark Zacharia offers his perspectives in "New Magic and Book Reviews" and finally in "Tricks for the Trade," Issue 64 offers two pieces from the publishers-a nest of boxes routine from Andrew Pinard and Jim Sist's torn and restored card with a surprise ending.

Mnemonica     $60.00

A celebrity of television and stage in Spain and South America, JUAN TAMARIZ is known internationally among magicians as a true master of his art, and one who generously shares his time and knowledge, both in print and in person, with the magic community. He is the author of three critically acclaimed best-selling books in English: The Five Points of Magic, The Magic Way and Sonata. Along with Arturo de Ascanio, Tamariz has spearheaded a school of thought in close-up magic that has produced FISM award-winning champions and deeply influenced the craft of magic worldwide.

Among those things Juan Tamariz is most recognized for, among magicians, is his trailblazing work with the memorized deck a tool with extraordinary potential for creating utterly baffling magic. Over the past two decades, Tamariz has been the recognized leader in its use and, with Simon Aronson in the United States (who contributes an introduction to this book), the most influential.

Tamariz's memorized deck stack, "Mnemonica", has become a legend with card magicians throughout the world, and within this book he reveals at last its complete workings, as well as teaching the reader how to memorize the stack-forever in as little as three hours. Accompanying this information are more than a hundred tricks and routines that radically expand the range of effects commonly thought possible with a memorized deck, and an annotated bibliography that leads the reader to an amazing body of additional material on the memorized deck, making Mnemonica the most complete study of its subject ever done.

Mnemonica is a virtual encyclopedia on the subject of memorized-deck magic, by the world's leading exponent and one of magic's acknowledged masters. It is a book crammed with magic from the working repertoire of Juan Tamariz, magic that leaves everyone, public and magicians, utterly astounded. It is a book capable of changing the reader's entire approach to card magic, and a work that supports Juan Tamariz's reputation as one of the most important and creative thinkers in magic today.
432 pages, over 400 photos, hardcover.

When Magic Becomes Theatre...

Pentalogy is almost 500 PAGES long with ZERO FLUFF!

Pentalogy is a collection of FIVE smaller books that R. Shane wrote and released over the course of five LONG years!

Pentalogy is a powerful set of routines of easy to do, NON-finger flinging close-up magic that is more accurately called Close Up THEATRE!

Pentalogy is filled with themes, stories, effects and ideas that provoke emotion and involvement. From the romantic to the frightening, from the bizarre to the beautiful. R. Shane has poured his heart and soul into this collection of real pieces of magic that he has tested and performed.

Pentalogy is real, useable magic that has been used in front of real audiences!

Here is an excerpt from the book's Introduction:

We can count. ONE. TWO. THREE. FOUR. FIVE. There are exactly five books, approximately five hundred pages, and nearly a hundred effects...

... Shane is a working magician. His presentations are not in the tradition of those tending to be seated in a nineteenth century library mixing tricks with brandy snifters and literary devices. He tries out his words on people in a variety of circumstances and prunes, prunes and prunes. The plots are not just potent, but also clear and to the point. Because the circumstances of a working professional do not encourage a lengthy dissertation or rambling story unaccompanied by visible enticements, the performances engage the audience right from the beginning. And let me add, contrary to some of us in this mode of magic, Shane neither pontificates nor preaches. He is having a whale of a good time and desires that the audience will too. Pick out any script and you will realize that his spirit is infectious.

The tricks? They are for close up and stand up performance. And Shane is well acquainted with both classic and contemporary methods and effects. The props are varied, to say the least. Sure, he employs playing cards and coins, but also a great many other uniquely and especially constructed vehicles. He relives upon different approaches to method, using what fits the demands of the effect, sleight of hand, gimmicks and/or subtlety. The tricks reveal a strong search for practicality. And they have been performed. Over and Over. Shane's discussions of his experiences and revision are extensive and stimulating. ... - Robert E. Neale
