Card Magic |
This routine combines two classic card magic routines and makes them obtainable to the beginner by eliminating difficult sleight of hand. "Back Off" is a blend of the "All Backs Routine" and "Triumph." Although totally different in methodology from the originals, the effect of "Back Off" is still similar to that of the original routines. A deck of cards is shown to be faulty due to there being backs printed on both sides of the cards! A spectator examines one of the cards from the unusable deck and verifies this to be true. However, with a magical gesture, the magician causes all the faces to become printed, making the deck as it should be. He then proceeds to take half the cards face up and half face down and shuffle them together. The deck is spread to show the messy condition of the cards. With his back turned the magician invites a spectator to remove a card and sign it on the face. This card is then replaced facedown into any point in the deck, which is then squared up before the magician turns back. A magical gesture is made and the cards are shown to have gone back to their original state of being - all backs on both sides, all except for one card which remains with it's face showing among the backs of the cards. Unbelievably, it is the signed selection! The only card not to be printed with a back on both sides again! The spectator keeps the card as a souvenir of this strange experience with a deck of cards! The trick can be easily repeated with a different card! Multiple handlings included as well as Tom Lauten's "Tidy Up" routine! This effect can be done in the hands or at the table! An unforgettable phenomenon-cards repeatedly change color...at your command! Four cards are shown to the audience which all have the same value. Have you ever taken a good look at the king of hearts? He's sometimes referred to as the 'suicide king' because he appears to be stabbing himself in the head with a sword. However, on closer examination you can see that the swords are actually positioned behind the king. With this introduction the performer begins an offbeat effect. The king of hearts is set aside, and a spectator selects two cards from the balance of the pack. However, when the king is turned over instead of the normal card back that was there before, now there's a view of the king from behind-and it's seen that the swords are skewering two miniature cards: the selections! A card is freely selected and torn into pieces. One piece is kept for identification. The remaining pieces magically restore, except for one piece whose perfect fit is used to confirm the identity of the card. As a finale, you offer to restore even this last piece. A card is selected and returned to the deck. The cards are shuffled and the magician, very confidently attempts to find the chosen card! After a few failed attempts, he asks the spectator the name of their card. "The Queen of Hearts," the spectator declares. "Really," the magician responds, "that’s strange because that is exactly how much I paid for this deck!" The spectator looks confused, and the performer picks up the card case and instructs them to look at the barcode. It reads, "I KNOW YOU CHOSE THE QUEEN OF HEARTS!" The deck is shuffled by a spectator and then handed back to the magician, who spreads through it and takes out a card, the identity of which is kept secret from the spectators. The magician then proceeds to fold the card into quarters, with the back outermost and places it into the grip of a bulldog clip. He explains that the card is a prediction. Now the deck is spread facedown and a spectator is asked to remove a card and sign it on the card's face. The card is returned to the deck and shuffled. The magician now draws attention to the card trapped in the bulldog clip. He places the deck to one side, picks up the clip, which has been in full view the whole time and removes the folded card from it, immediately handing it to the spectator. It is unfolded and seen to be the signed card! |
Ask a volunteer to pick a card from the deck, then return it and shuffle the deck. Standard procedure....so far! Now this is where things get interesting! Pull your Credit Card out of the wallet, present its front and back to the crowd and lay it facedown on the table. Whilst doing this, present the volunteer with the following dare; "I'll make you an offer you can't refuse. I'll try to read your mind and find our which card you picked. If I get it right, you owe me a dollar, but if I miss, you get to go shopping with my credit card!" While in deep concentration, you go through the deck, extract the card you settled on, and place it on the table. "Wrong Card!" he'll declare victoriously. Once he does, ask him to announce the correct card. "The eight of diamonds," he'll say. You ask him to turn the credit card over. Just imagine his face, when he'll realize that the figure in the credit card is actually holding the eight of diamonds.

Five bike-riding jokers are displayed, backs and fronts. One joker-the leader-is put aside, face-down. One by one, the remaining jokers turn over. When the faces of the cards are displayed, they are seem to bear only abandoned bicycles. Where are the missing jokers? They're found on the face of the leader card, where they've joined together in an acrobatic cycling demonstration! In search of the Giant Snow Monster? A great sucker trick with a surprise punch! You show five cards blank on both sides (snow) and a sixth card with a picture of a strange footprint Bigfoot! The Bigfoot card is mixed in with the blanks and the spectator tries to "track down" Bigfoot by selecting a card. The chosen card is turned over and sure enough, he's found Bigfoot! Amazing! The spectator tries again, and you triumphantly show the face of the selected card stating that the spectator has again tracked down Bigfoot!! However, the spectator points out that it is a blank card! "I don't know how you missed. You must have gone snow-blind!? you say as you show the rest of the packet is now all Bigfoot cards! |
You take a deck of cards and tell the audience that you have made a prediction that is in your inside coat pocket. You proceed to let a spectator choose a card, and then show you have predicted it by removing from your pocket a Jumbo Eight of Spades (for example). The spectator protests that this is incorrect, so you ask for the name of the card chosen. "The Queen of Hearts" (for example) you are told. "In that case," you say, "I must perform what is called in the trade, a switch." You turn the card around and fixed to the back is a wall switch, you solemnly flip the switch. When you turn the card round again, it has changed to the correct card, the Queen of Hearts. |
